Formaldehyde is a colourless gas which occurs naturally in the environment and is emitted by processes such as combustion and decay and is emitted naturally by all timber species. Formaldehyde is an important part of the adhesives used in plywood products. It is also found in many commonly used products such as vinyl, wallpaper, mirrors, textiles, timber, dishwashing liquid and even toothpaste.
To gain categorisation as a ‘low-formaldehyde emission’ product, finished pressed-wood products must meet test criteria levels of less than 1ppm formaldehyde.
